You mistake me. I’m no naive materialist. But that doesn’t mean I accept uncritically every fantastical attempt to explain our existence. This is not an argument from incredulity. I believe Bostrom’s argument is absolutely riddled with holes - I’ve gone through those in more detail in the postscript due to others finding my critique too brief. Yes we should be open minded about reality. But we should also always apply logical and critical analysis to an argument. Bostrom gets away with anything because he relies on the myth of infinite progress. If we accept future humans can do anything and therefore will do anything then sure, maybe we’re one of their simulations, or maybe we’re in a universe they made in some other way. But “can and will do anything” is such a lazy and vacuous premise that it can never really amount to anything except a stoner trip. It’s scientifically and philosophically worthless.
