Maybe a little harsh on the man. His autobiography does not read like that of a man with an oversized ego at all. He is generally quite self-effacing and talks frankly about the mathematical errors he would make which Pauli would pick up. And he did not suppress Oppenheimer, but simply let him read the petition from the other students and respond how he chose. Oppenheimer went pale, so clearly was unaware of the bad impression he was making. I would think he was probably glad that Born let him know, in a way that avoided a confrontation. Still, I take your point that it is better for mistakes to be corrected.
