I think you’ve assumed that these problems have all been caused by the earplugs, but it may actually be the other way round - you started using the earplugs due to a preexisting sound sensitivity to that has increased over time. In other words, misophonia may be your problem, not earplugs. I’ve used earplugs intermittently to try to improve sleep and, while I did start to feel I needed them to sleep, it was pretty easy to stop when I wanted to.
