Even as a non-theist I feel that is a stretch. God as pictured in Christianity is a constantly loving source. In this sense he cannot change his mind, and become not-loving. Otherwise he would indeed contradict his own essence. But a constantly loving creator whose essence does not change can in no way be equated with atheism.
