Eh, your next sentence notwithstanding, this is a stretch I feel. Lacan talked about this idea of an introjected social observer of one's actions as a psychodynamic phenomenon, the inner parent for whom one is performing, and this seems both convincing and prior to God. ie, it is more plausible that God is a projection of the child-parent relationship than the other way round. Is the Instagrammer performing for a parent or God though? Not so much. The imagined observer is simply an abstraction of the peer group, or social world. And if you think that cancel culture excesses and twitter mobbings are "going backwards" from religion, well you might want to revisit such historical high points as the burning of witches - governed by similar hysteria and out-grouping, but so much worse.
